Pantai Tanjung Tinggi is a popular scenic beach on the island of Belitung, Indonesia.

From a photography standpoint, Tanjung Tinggi Beach is easily one of the most incredible beaches I’ve seen, right up there with the best spots in Seychelles or Thailand.

Best of all, it’s completely free to visit and there are no tourist hordes (yet). This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

Pantai Tanjung Tinggi Beach

Tanjung Tinggi Beach is a perfect combo of white sand, smooth granite boulders, and turquoise water.

The beach is actually inside of a small bay, so the water is calm, and if you swim out to the edge of the rocks there are nice coral reefs to see.

I don’t have much snorkeling experience at this beach, so I can’t comment on currents.

The boulders behind the beach are fun to explore, and some of them have banyan trees wrapping their roots around them. There’s even one giant boulder called the Papaya Rock (pictured below).

Sadly, around the beach there’s a fair amount of trash left by the locals. If Indonesia cleans the place up, it could easily be world class.

Pantai Laskar Pelangi

Tanjung Tinggi was one of the popular filming locations for the Indonesian movie Laskar Pelangi in 2008.

This gave Belitung a tourism boost, and the beach was nicknamed Pantai Laskar Pelangi (Indonesian for “Rainbow Troop Beach”) because of its role in the movie.

There’s a sign near the entrance telling about how the beach was featured in the movie.

Sunset At Pantai Tanjung Tinggi

Tanjung Tinggi Beach is one of the most popular places to watch the sunset on Belitung island.

You get to see the sun setting over the boulders, with a mirror-like reflection on the water. There are lots of great photo spots in golden hour.

It’s top notch!

Entrance Fees

As of 2024, there’s no entrance fee at Tanjung Tinggi Beach, although you have to pay a small parking fee.

How To Get There

Pantai Tanjung Tinggi is located on the northwest corner of Belitung island, about 40 minutes from Tanjung Pandan city.

The best way to get there is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver. You can book either of these with Billitone Capture.

Belitung Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

If you want to explore Belitung in the comfort and safety of a private car with a driver, my recommendation would be Billitone Capture (+62 853-1555-5288).

Their price is 400k Rupiah ($26 USD) for a day tour of driving and sightseeing in Belitung for 1-5 passengers. That’s the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol. For longer distance trips, there may be a surcharge.

If you’d rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 75k Rupiah (~$5) in Tanjung Pandan city.
