The Tukad Cepung Waterfall is a unique-looking curtain waterfall hidden inside a cave in Tembuku village, east Bali.

The morning sun has a way of shining into this ravine that makes it extra photogenic, and in just a short time, it’s gone from being a secret spot to a now-famous picture that you can’t miss on any Bali Instagram page.

You’ve probably already seen the fancy photos on the internet, and you’re just wondering how to get there from Ubud or Kuta. The good news is that it’s not very far from any of the touristy areas in Bali.

This travel guide will explain how to get to Tukad Cepung Waterfall, and everything you need to know before you go!

Tukad Cepung Waterfall – What To Expect

The hike to the waterfall takes about 15 minutes, but it’s a decent workout.

You’ll go down a steep concrete stairway at first, then the path levels out for awhile as you walk alongside the stream, and then you go down another steep staircase to the riverbed.

The last few stairs are uneven, and ridiculously big. I’d say they’re two or three times as big as normal stairs. They feel like they were built for giants! There’s a railing, but it may still be awkward for older people with mobility issues.

If you turn right at the riverbed, there’s a smaller waterfall with leafy jungle surroundings, nice for a natural shower. If you turn left, there’s a rocky path leading to Tukad Cepung.

In the final part of the hike, you have to walk through the shallow river bed and around some giant boulders. Sandals are better than shoes because you can keep them on for the whole hike.

Once you reach the waterfall, it can be very crowded and you may have to wait in line for awhile with everyone else wanting to take photos. To be honest, I don’t think it’s as impressive as the pictures you see online.

Tukad Cepung is still a great waterfall, but I don’t think it deserves the insane popularity it’s gotten from Instagram when there are lots of other great Bali waterfalls waiting to be discovered.

If you want to see a similar ‘waterfall in a cave’ without the crowds, you can visit Goa Raja Waterfall just 10 minutes away from this one!

When To Visit

The waterfall is flowing all year round, so any month is good for visiting.

If you want to see the sun rays shining down into the cave, the best time to visit is in the morning (probably around 9 AM to 11 AM).

If you’d rather avoid the crowds, the best time to visit would be later in the afternoon, but even then you’re not guaranteed to have the waterfall to yourself because it’s such a popular spot.

How To Get To Tukad Cepung Waterfall

The waterfall is located in Tembuku village, in the Bangli area of east Bali.

It’s a 1 hour drive from Ubud, or about 1.5 hours from Kuta, and you can easily combine it with Goa Raja Waterfall since the two spots are only a few minutes apart!

The best way to get there is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online).

You can also book a 1-day tour package with hotel pickup/dropoff that includes stops at Tukad Cepung, Tibumana Waterfall, Tegalalang Rice Terrace, and the Bali swing.

Bali Private Driver & Motorbike Rental

If you want to explore Bali in the comfort and safety of a private car with an English speaking driver, my top recommendation would be GetYourGuide.

Their price is 650k Rupiah ($45 USD) for a full day of driving and sightseeing in Bali (up to 10 hours) for 1-5 passengers. That’s the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol! It’s a great deal. They also offer affordable hotel transfers from the airport.

If you’d rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 140k Rupiah (~$9) and include a helmet, rain coat, and free delivery in the south Bali area.

We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.
